Topic: Re: trouble booting system

Hi,
I recently purchased a decommissioned hdi 5000 sonoct machine. Was testing it out prior to reading the manual and was getting great images/everything was working well. One of my coworkers left the machine turned on for several hours and then turned the machine off without turning the circuit breaker off. The machine now won't turn on. I have tried turning the circuit breaker off/on and the machine from standby to on. A humming sound is produced but no LEDs illuminate nor does any image appear on the screen. Any idea what could be going on?

Re: Re: trouble booting system

The humming noise is from the isolation transformer. It sounds like you have power going into the AC input and into the isolation transformer, but nothing being sent out from there.

On the ACIM (AC input module) where the cable from the wall plugs into, and you might need to remove the backplate to see it, there are 7 LEDs. From top to bottom they are: 1 - HVDC to PSM (power supply module), 2-5 - Not Used, 6 - Power to HVDC (transformer), 7 - HVDC output to card cage.

With the power cable plugged in and nothing is switched on, all LEDs should be off. When you flip the switch on the ACIM, LEDs 6 and 7 should light up. If the #7 isn't lit up, then no power is being supplied to the PSM, and the PSM might be faulty, or there's a problem with the ACIM.

Having said that... there isn't a whole lot of other information in the service manual that states what to do when the machine doesn't power up, other than "replace parts until the problem goes away".

I'll see if any service guys I work with know more about it.

Re: Re: trouble booting system

Thanks for the information Todd. Had a look behind the casing - LEDs 6 & 7 are lit but LED 1 isn't. Definite humming noise coming from rear of machine. Is there anything I can do to further isolate the problem? My brother is a software engineer so is there is anything I can request him to investigate?

Re: Re: trouble booting system

The HDI 5000 has a power supply unit in the front of the system (PSM - power supply module) with 4 power packs made by a company called Vicor. They last anywhere from 3-5 years and are the leading cause of failure in PSM's.

**Make sure the machine is unplugged before doing any sort of board removal**

Without any parts to troubleshoot, all I can suggest is checking boards for physical damage. The PSM is behind a white panel on the front, which can be removed by taking out the two screws at the bottom left and right of the panel. If you lift up and pull the panel comes off. The PSM is on the far left, held in by 6 or so screws, after those are out use the white tabs to remove the PSM. There will be a black pedal just above the left wheel at the front which controls the braking mechanism... it is a bit large and in the way when you go to remove the PSM, so you can either take it off, or have someone hold it as far forward as you can while you remove the PSM.

I'd look for burn marks on the back/bottom, or damaged components.
